Locals got a chance to test themselves in the pressurised surroundings of The Kube, in Mitchelstown Enterprise Centre.

Locals got a chance to test themselves in the pressurised surroundings of The Kube when a fundraising event, based on the popular television show, took place in Mitchelstown Enterprise Centre on Saturday night, December 27.

A private company supplied all The Kube accessories and as in the real thing, some contestants faired better than others. The production was very slick with lights, display screens, dry ice and accompanying sound effects all adding to the show.

The brainchild of Mitchelstown Youth Cafe, its members were out in force and they, along with parents and friends, ensured things ran smoothly. While there wasn’t a huge crowd present on the night, we understand however, that ticket sales were strong and the over 18 audience were brilliantly entertained for several hours.

Organisers canvassed extensively for support and successfully recruited contestants from the town’s business community, neighbouring sports clubs and voluntary groups – Mitchelstown gardai were represented by Garda John Hennessy.

There was a token operated bar in operation and a DJ provided the music after The Kube activity ceased.

All monies raised will be directed into the provision of a permanent home for Mitchelstown Youth Cafe, which hopes to provide a wide range of services and activities for teenagers. While the youth cafe concept hasn’t worked in every village and town, the Mitchelstown project is well structured and benefits from plenty of expertise.

Those who have helped the Mitchelstown model get off the ground are confident that their cafe will go on to become a valuable and sustainable social and recreational hub for Mitchelstown’s young people.
